BIS ISI Certification
In India, the Technical Regulations take the form of Quality Control Orders (QCOs). Once a QCO for any product is issued the manufacture, import, distribution, sell, hire, lease, store or exhibit for sale of product(s) covered under that QCO without valid Licence BIS becomes prohibited.
Indian government has started issuing more and more number of QCOs and thus obtaining a license for ISI mark has become critical for a large number of products. In the past decade or so the number of products requiring ISI license under a QCO has jumped more than five folds.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. Under the mandate, Quality Control Order(QCO) is issued where every manufacturer needs to take BIS licence. BIS operate Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme(FMCS) where licence is issued to foreign manufacturers. Currently, BIS has issued licence to the more than 1000 manufactures form more than 60 different countries.
ISI Approval Process:
- Selection of Code/Indian Standard
- Assessment of manufacturing and testing setup of factory
- Preparation of documentation related to ISI application
- Application submission to BIS and responding to BIS queries, if any
- Preparation for BIS audit: scope definition, sample preparation, training of QA staff as per Indian Standard etc.
- Factory Audit by BIS officer including verification of declared parameters, sample drawl for external testing
- Examination of audit report and sample test report by BIS
- Approval and Grant of License
